Attack of the Clones |

Last week we looked a stem cell research. We saw that stem cells are found in both adults and embryos. Remember, an embryo is really a baby! And the same stem cells found in embryos are also found in umbilical cords. So, why the emphasis on embryonic stem cell research? Because the next step is cloning. The logic is that by cloning, two problems are solved. 1. It produces the embryos to experiment on. 2. Young, healthy stem cells can be created from a person that will not be rejected by his/her body. Cloning is a ghastly concept. They say its purpose is to grow replacement parts. The idea is simple. If they make a clone, an exact copy of you, then there will be no danger of your body rejecting the organ. Sounds great, doesn't it! Some years ago I caught my son, Tim, watching a science fiction series called, Sliders. Now, parents need to know what their kids are watching, so I began watching Sliders with him; only as a parent to protect Tim. The main characters slid from one dimension into another. One slide brought them to a community of people missing body parts: eyes, limbs, organs. Then they discovered why. They were the clones!! They had been grown for body parts. When the original person's eyes grew week or injured, no problem. Take them from the clone. Lose an arm, get one from the clone. Need a kidney, Take one from the clone. The promoters of embryonic research make it sound like if you need a new heart they will grow one by cloning. The reality is they will make another you. It will be your child. Then they would take the body part from your child. People thought Hitler was a monster for trying to breed a super-race. What would the nation think if the full impact of cloning were emphasized by the media? |
